Paddlesports Sampler

Curious about paddlesport, but not sure how to get involved? Maybe you’ve been kayaking for years, but want to give that paddleboard or canoe a try? Come down to Osprey Sea and Surf Adventures for our Paddlesport Sampler! This course is a great way to discover a new passion in kayaks, canoes and paddleboards. We will take a look at each craft, learn a few skills, but mostly have fun out on the water. To cap the experience, we will end the class with an hour of free water time in the craft of your choice. 

Cost: $55  Time: 2 hours of instruction/1 hour rental time

No prerequisites required, Ages 14year and older.

Fundamentals of Canoeing

Grab a partner and come on down to Osprey for some tandem canoe fun! We will start the course working with outfitting, seating, and core principals of paddlesport. Expect to learn proper technique for moving forward, side to side, and turning. After learning some skills in tandem, we will spend some time discussing solo canoe technique, and rescues. This is a perfect course for anyone who wants to more effectively, and safely get out on the water.

Fundamentals of Kayaking

Whether you have paddled for years, or are just beginning, solid fundamentals are the key to fun and safety on the water. In this half day class you will learn about kayaking equipment & safety, how to exit an overturned kayak, and the basics of boat movement & control. This innovative course focuses on building “Core Principles of Paddlesports”. The core principles are techniques that apply to all strokes allowing you to understand how to maneuver your boat in a variety of conditions with less effort & greater results. This is an instructional experience you won’t find anywhere else.

Cost: $65  Time: 3 hours,  Equivalent to ACA Level 1 skills

Solid rescue skills create safety and confidence on the water. In this rescue class we will show the fundamentals of rescue technique in a flat water environment. Expect to cover self-rescues, T-rescues, spotting techniques, and tactics for getting paddlers back in their boats. This course is a great opportunity for any kayaker getting into the sport.

Kayak Touring Essentials

With solid flat water kayak skills on board, it’s time to apply them to the context! This course will focus on boat control and movement in the context of wind, swell, and current. Expect to revisit the fundamentals of paddlesport, and be introduced to different methods for rescues, launching, and landing. Content is designed for paddlers who are new to ocean environments, or are looking to improve their performance and personal safety. This is a great follow up to a kayak fundamentals course.

Want to feel comfortable in your kayak in most any situation? The roll is indisputably the best self rescue! While the roll is simple to perform, it can be awkward to learn. Our instructors will break down the elements of the roll into individual skills and troubleshoot your performance so that your roll becomes automatic. Aside from the tremendous sense of accomplishment you’ll get from learning to roll, you’ll find that skills like bracing and edging your kayak will improve as well. This one technique can provide the confidence you need to push all your skills to the next level!

Tidal Current Clinic

In a coastal environment, the water is always moving. In this clinic, we will introduce strategies for trip planning, as well as technique for moving your boat through current rich environments. Expect to spend a few minutes on land discussing how tide and currents are related, and then get right on the water for eddy hopping, attaining, ferry angles, and rescue strategies.

Rocks and Surf Clinic

Sometimes you have to land in a hurry. This class is designed to give paddlers the tools to land in rocks and surf, navigate challenging slots, and have a little fun along the way. Expect to catch a few waves, work on timing and technique, and navigate rock features. Bring your helmet! 

Cost: $105.00  Time: 4 hrs

Incident Management

This course is designed to introduce paddlers to risk assessment, and tactics for managing consequence while on the water. This includes ways to move groups safely through environments, fix boats, make radio calls, and rescues. Are you looking to start guiding or working on your management skills? This course will move your focus from personal skills, to thinking about the group and the environment.

Basics of Navigation and Trip Planning

This classroom session is designed to get paddlers acquainted with the forces of wind, tide, current, and swell. We will introduce tactics for predicting conditions, as well as strategies to make your days on the water as efficient as possible. Activities will include route finding, as well as working with charts and navigational tools.

Adventure Tours

Coastal Navigation

With a sound understanding of navigational theory, let’s put it to some use! We will briefly work on a trip plan, discuss local wind, swell, and tide, then get right on the water. Concepts discussed will likely include set, drift, ferry angles, ranges, and vectors. Bring your compasses, as we will also work on some tactics for fog.

Kayak Surfing 101

Experience the thrill that is surfing. This course will introduce you to the dynamics of the surf zone: safety, equipment and essential paddling skills. We will focus on the basics: catching, riding, and getting off the wave. Sit-on-top surf kayaks will be used.

Please be advised, surf kayaking takes place in a dynamic environment and therefore has a higher risk factor. Surf 101 is condition dependent, call ahead for reservations.
