Navigation, Trip Planning & Maine Sea Kayak Guide Test Prep Courses!

Taken individually or together these are two great courses to jump start your sea kayaking season. Join guest instructor, Nate Hansen of Pinniped Kayak, for a weekend of Navigation, Trip Planning, Leadership & Maine Guide Test Prep.

April 14Trip Planning, Navigation and Principles of Leadership.

The difference between a fun or exciting trip, and a terrifying near-disaster is often preparation and planning.  In this classroom-based course, we’ll hone our navigation and trip-planning skills for tidal environments.  We’ll also consider the inside-the-skull skills that go into proper leadership; the kind of leadership that knows what’s going to happen before it happens, and get’s the most out of a paddling day by striving for a harmonious intersection of paddler abilities, environmental offerings, and leadership assets.  This course will offer differentiated instruction for paddlers at various levels, from those with basic navigation skills to those beginning to lead groups in advanced tidal environments.
Time: 9am – 3pm    Cost: $125.00

April 15thMaine Sea Kayak Exam Preparation

This classroom-based session will give participants an overview of content covered in the Maine Guide License Exam for Sea Kayaking, and we will review knowledge required of a successful Maine Guide Candidate.  Curriculum will be adjusted according to student needs and questions, and we hope to foster a dynamic group-learning environment, where each student is able to contribute their knowledge, and learn from their classmates’ strengths.  The class will work through sample questions, and we will offer each student a mock-oral exam – in our experience, these mock orals are one of the most important factors in preparing for the Maine Guide Exam.   Participation in this class does not guarantee that you will pass the Maine Guide Exam (which is administered by the State of Maine in Augusta).  However, we are proud of our students’ high first-attempt pass rate over the past 6 years that we have been offering Maine Guide Training.

This course is appropriate for paddlers with established on-water leadership skills, who have had BCU 3-star, ACA L3 Instructor, or similar leadership training.

Time: 9am – 4pm     Cost: $125.00
